We were driving down the road from the Savegre Lodge, looking for a nest of the Quetzal, and stopped for a while when one was spotted. By coincidence, we also saw this Acorn Woodpecker perched on a bare tree, fairly high up, but at least in some decent light, and with blue skies behind it! This was a rare occurrence! I decided to let the others keep looking for the Quetzal while I took several shots of this beautiful woodpecker. The sun was coming from behind and to my left, so the bird was mostly in the shadow of the branch, and I used the flash to try and add some light to the shadowed areas.
