Brown Pelican

There were a fair number of Brown Pelicans that would frequent the shoreline, but whenever I was out shooting them, they were staying pretty far from the shore. On one particularly calm day, I carefully waded out in the water, going knee-deep, to try and get a little closer to the action. I was a bit anxious out there, imagining the disaster of tripping or having a large wave suddenly come up, but didn't encounter any problems of this sort. I took this shot while a group flew across the shore going from flying over the water, to a path over the land. I have a number of other shots, but they were so far away that I would have needed a 600mm to 800mm lens to really get a decent image. Canon 100-400 at 400mm, ISO 400, f/5.6 and 1/800 second (hand-held).
