I had never heard of, much less seen, the White-faced Heron, and so was very excited to see a few of these while I was shooting the Oystercatchers down below the Seal Colony area at Kaikoura. These were a bit further away from me, and I had to slowly skoot on my bottom toward them, pushing the very low-set tripod and camera in front of me. I was eventually able to get close enough for some decent shots. I have a nice sequence of this heron spotting and then eating some type of crab. I did end up putting my hand into some fresh bird droppings (!) as I skooted up, but it was worth it.
