We had just left Kikoura on a whale-watching trip when the Captain made a brief stop where a huge school of Dusky Dolphins was cavorting around. It was simply incredible - there were easily over 100 dolphins, and they were jumping, doing flips and twists, all over the place. They'd be up, out of the water, and back in, before you knew it, and it was quite a challenge trying to get one in the viewfinder while still in the air. Knowing what I do now, I think I'd have skipped the whale-watching tour, and opted for the dolphin trip. They were dramatically more numerous, more entertaining, and definitely more interesting photographically.
