This was one of the best, and most exciting, bear encounters we had on this trip. We had turned onto the road leading to the "Petrified Tree" to check it out, and by sheer luck, came across this Black Bear. At first it had actually climbed part-way up a tree. It took me too long to set up my camera to get any shots of it in the tree but after coming down, it fed and meandered around for quite some time, moving gradually closer and closer to us. Eventually it came up to the road, crossed over, and started feeding on the opposite hillside. I had to back up some, to give it an ample berth, but it never did seem to be bothered by the presence of several dozen tourists.
